I’m not usually the type to rely on packaged ingredients for recipes, but sometimes, when life gets crazy and then all of a sudden it’s dinner time, it’s nice to have an easy recipe to throw together. This one definitely relies on some help from the store, but if you felt so inclined, you could certainly make everything from scratch. Here is a wonderfully tasty recipe for super easy Stromboli.
Stromboli is basically a calzone. But instead of all the crust being on the outside, Stromboli is rolled so the crust is layered throughout the filling. You could use any fillings you like for this recipe. Here is my family’s favorite combination:
Super Easy Stromboli
1 pound ground Italian sausage, browned
1 package good quality pepperoni
1 bell pepper, diced
2 cups baby spinach
3/4-1 cup prepared marinara sauce (you can use jarred or you could make this recipe which uses the crock pot!)
1 12 oz. package sliced provolone cheese (you could also use shredded mozzarella)
1 pound prepared pizza dough (I like Trader Joes’s brand, but even the kind in a cardboard tube would work)
olive oil for brushing on top
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone baking mat.
Brown the sausage in a skillet. Drain off the excess fat.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough so it is 1/4″=1/2″ thick. Shape doesn’t really matter…it can be round or a rectangle. Just try to get it to a uniform thickness.
Spread the marinara sauce on the dough. Add the pepperoni, sausage, bell pepper, and spinach.
Break the slices of cheese into pieces and layer on top of the other ingredients.
Roll the dough with all the ingredients inside and transfer to your baking sheet, seam side down. It will feel like the entire thing is going to fall apart. but it won’t!
Pinch the ends or tuck them under to seal in all the cheese.
Brush the top with olive oil and bake for 20-30 minutes or until the dough is nice and brown. Cool for 10 minutes before cutting.Share This Post!
